As I scan through media outlets this morning, I realize how serious the fires in Australia have gotten. Images showing the “beauty of nature being destroyed by the power of nature”. Images of men feeding animals rescued from the fires. Images of unity, of love among rescue workers. It reminds me of the images following the 9/11 events in the United States of America. A time when a whole nation came together and spoke in one voice. No one could sense the division between white and colored people, between democrats and republicans.
I’m amazed at how people from across the globe are calling out for prayers. And as with any trending event, there are already hashtags for this occasion: #PrayForAustralia, #Pray4Australia…
I am afraid I may not sound politically or religiously correct through what follows. I find myself questioning. Why should we pray for Australia?
I am not quite certain that all the people posting over social media believe in God. One thing is certain, deep inside of them, they trust there’s got to be some kind of intervention power when people pray.
Here are my concerns:
“Should we just believe in the power of prayer and make use of it only during calamities?” Sounds like we ignore God and the power of prayer all year long and only remember Him when disaster strikes.”
Allow me to take you back to the good book, as many call it, the Bible. Countless times, people rebelled against God by turning on their own ways and wisdom that God’s judgment fell upon them in the form of calamities and invasions from foreign powers. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that Australia or Africa, or the Bahamas, or California are under God’s judgment. And of course, nothing excludes that option too.
Going back to the Bible, I realized that it is during hard seasons that people would turn their hearts back to God and humble before Him. And God would send delivers (judges) to lead them through the storms.
Going back to our point. Australia, California, the Amazon forest… all these regions have experienced terrible fires in the past few days or months. Africa, the middle-east, Syria… are still experience the worse wars and famine in the world.
If we ever pray. What do we pray then?
I will not just pray for Australia or for California that God may spare lives in those regions. I will, and I am praying that people’s hearts will be turned back to God. I am praying not just for Australia but also for America, for Europe, for Africa, for Asia, for the whole world that God’s mercy, revealed through His son Jesus Christ will be witnessed again in our lives.
I am praying and I ask you to join me as we pray that people will turn from their wicked ways and go back to the source of life and giver of meaning to life, Jesus Christ. We are all witnesses that the world system has failed and is falling before our eyes. For though we are the wealthiest and the largest population that has ever lived on earth, we still are the least happy people.
“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?”Mark 8:36
Join me as we pray for revival over the nations.
